Fast Charging Explained: Power Delivery, Quick Charge and What the Watts Mean

“Fast charging” is printed on almost every phone, charger and cable sold today, but the term hides a lot of confusing jargon: Power Delivery, Quick Charge, watts, volts and amps. This guide explains, in plain English, what fast charging really is and what you need for it to work.

What “fast charging” actually means

Charging speed is measured in watts (W). Watts are simply volts (V) multiplied by amps (A) — voltage is the “pressure” and amperage is the “flow” of electricity. A standard old-style charger delivers around 5W (5V × 1A). Modern fast chargers deliver anywhere from 18W to 120W, pushing far more power into your battery in the same amount of time. More watts, up to your phone’s limit, means a faster charge.

The two main fast-charging standards

For fast charging to work, your phone, charger and cable all have to “speak the same language.” Two standards dominate:

USB Power Delivery (USB-PD)

USB-PD is the universal fast-charging standard built into USB-C. It lets a charger and device negotiate the safest, fastest voltage automatically, and it scales from phones all the way up to laptops. Because it is an open standard, USB-PD works across brands — a good USB-PD charger will fast-charge most modern phones, including recent iPhones and Android devices.

Qualcomm Quick Charge (QC)

Quick Charge is a fast-charging technology found in many Android phones that use Qualcomm Snapdragon processors. It achieves similar results to USB-PD, and the latest versions are designed to be compatible with it. You’ll see it advertised as Quick Charge 3.0, 4.0 and so on.

Many phone makers — Samsung, OnePlus, Oppo, Xiaomi and others — also layer their own branded fast-charging on top, but most modern phones will fast-charge from a quality USB-PD charger.

Why the cable matters for fast charging

This is the part people miss: the cable is part of the circuit, and a weak cable becomes the bottleneck. To carry high power safely, a cable needs thicker conductors and, for the highest speeds, an “e-marker” chip that tells the charger how much power it can handle. Plug a high-wattage charger into a thin, cheap cable and you’ll get slow charging at best — and a hot, stressed cable at worst.

  • For phones, a cable rated to at least 60W comfortably handles fast charging.
  • For laptops or the very fastest phones, look for a 100W (sometimes 240W) rated cable with an e-marker chip.

We compare these ratings in detail in our guide to 60W vs 100W USB-C cables.

The three things you need, together

To actually get fast charging, all three of these must support it:

  1. A phone that supports a fast-charging standard (almost all do now).
  2. A charger rated for enough watts and the right standard (USB-PD or Quick Charge).
  3. A cable rated to carry that power — ideally USB-C to USB-C for modern devices.

If any one of the three is the weak link, charging falls back to a slower speed. That’s why a new “fast” charger sometimes makes no difference — the old cable is holding it back.

Does fast charging damage your battery?

Modern phones are designed for fast charging and include circuitry to manage heat and protect the battery. Fast charging is generally safe. That said, heat is the enemy of lithium batteries, so charging on a cool surface (not under a pillow) and avoiding constant 100% charging will help your battery’s long-term health. Many phones now include “optimised” or “adaptive” charging settings that slow the final stage of charging to reduce wear.

The bottom line

Fast charging isn’t magic — it’s just more watts, delivered safely, with every part of the chain cooperating. If you want the quickest charge, pair your phone with a USB-PD charger and a properly rated USB-C cable. Get the cable right and you’ll unlock the full speed your phone is capable of.
